FROM THE PRESIDENT:

America’s national wildlife refuges represent the enduring conservation values of all Americans. When Teddy Roosevelt set aside tiny Pelican Island in Florida as the nation’s first national wildlife refuge, he recognized that our wildlife heritage represented something far more valuable than simply sourcing bird feathers for the latest fashion trends.

Today, there are many federal policy and budget proposals under consideration in Congress that could severely harm our nation’s National Wildlife Refuge System.

In late July, the House passed legislation to build a road through congressionally designated wilderness in Izembek NWR in Alaska. If enacted into law, this would set a dangerous precedent for all national wildlife refuges and wilderness areas throughout the country. The House released its FY18 budget, which included instructions for the Natural Resources Committee to produce an additional $5 billion to offset budget cuts. We expect lawmakers to use this opportunity to try and open the Arctic Refuge to oil drilling, citing the potential to generate an additional $1.8 billion within the next 10 years. Santa Ana NWR, located in South Texas, may become ground zero for the construction of President Trump’s new border wall as the Department of Homeland Security seeks additional funding from Congress. We at the Refuge Association are monitoring these actions and are working closely with congressional leaders and partners to stop these proposals.

Clearly we need to support our refuges because of their incredible natural resource values, and it is imperative that our nation protects its investment in our national wildlife refuges. The impressive economic value of refuges is undeniable. Forty-eight million people visit national wildlife refuges every year generating $2.4 billion to local economies. More than 35,000 people are employed as a direct result of having a refuge nearby, resulting in almost $800 million in employment income.

provide a 20 percent boost to the National Wildlife Refuge System workforce – the equivalent of 600+ full time employees and valued at $32 million per year.

Many refuge Friends call the experience the most meaningful in their lives. Their volunteer experience has not only deepened a commitment to the natural world, but also strengthened ties to their community. They will tell you that refuges are indispensible to wildlife and to our citizens.

Refuges always need new friends and supporters, now perhaps more than ever. We’re thankful for your continued support, and encourage you to get outside and experience your National Wildlife Refuge System.

Sincerely,

Geoffrey Haskett

ON THE REFUGE:

As the summer comes to a close at the end of this month, many of our summer volunteer interns are finishing up their internships on national wildlife refuges across the country. They’ve participated in a wide variety of activities on national wildlife refuges, from hosting education programs to working with endangered species. Our volunteer internship program, in partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, has proven to be an incredible experience for emerging wildlife and conservation professionals.

A Kentucky preacher-turned-politician's web of lies

Welcome To Pope's House

On a Saturday afternoon at the fellowship hall, the stereo blares Southern rock anthems for a flock of Harley riders in leather vests.

Banners on the wall honor veterans, and flags commemorate the Confederacy. A disco ball hovers over a clawfoot tub full of canned beers two bucks buys you a token and a token gets you a drink from Charlie the bartender.

In one corner of the room, the "Pope" strides across a stage, his voice full of fervor as he auctions off items to the highest bidder. A motorcyclist died recently in a crash and there is money to be raised for the man’s family.

At the fellowship hall, called "Pope’s House," next to the Heart of Fire Church in southeast Louisville, the motto is “when you are here, you are family.”

And today, Danny Ray Johnson, 57, the self-proclaimed pope, bishop and minister to outcasts, really wants you to bid on this gift card to a local tattoo shop.

“I need somebody right now that’ll give me $50 on a $150 tattoo,” he says. “Who will give me $50?”

The Pope, as everyone knows him, commands this side of the room, his voice tinged with the Louisiana drawl of his youth. His biceps are decorated in ink, his sideburns white, his golden pompadour thinning.

Long ago, Johnson fashioned an identity as a modern-day American patriot. Pro-gun, pro-God, pro-life. He talked in 2013 about making America great again. He lamented the lack of God in everyone’s lives. He wept over the country’s future.

But behind this persona cultivated, built up and fine-tuned over decades is a web of lies and deception. A mysterious fire. Attempted arson and false testimony. Alleged molestation in his church.

In Johnson's wake lies a trail of police records and court files, shattered lives and a flagrant disregard for truth.

This seven-month investigation is based on more than 100 interviews and several thousand pages of public documents. It also included numerous attempts to interview Johnson, who refused all requests.

Over and over, there were warning signs for government officials, law enforcement, political leaders and others. Yet, virtually nothing was done. For years, Johnson broke laws. Now, he helps make them.

In his latest feat, Johnson catapulted himself into the Kentucky Capitol in 2016 as representative for the Clearance Inexpensive Ivyrevel Mini Dress with Slit in Rib Jersey Release Dates Authentic Official Buy Cheap New Styles EBoypOl
.

To hear him tell it, Johnson has been on stage nearly his whole life. Like Forrest Gump, he just so happens to be in the front row, playing a pivotal role in America’s biggest moments. Time after time. Decade after decade.

He claims he served as White House chaplain to three presidents. A United Nations ambassador. He says he set up the morgue after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and was thepastor who gave last rites for all of those pulled from the towers.

That fact means that folks will not only need to tolerate the need to share rides, if they want to preserve commerce, but learn to avoid places where people concentrate too much and share events too much. Not only avoid those places but avoid ROUTES THROUGH THEM. This situation calls to question our ability to make people share as easily as we think, to make them prefer urbanist ideals of places, and even to remove parking as much as we think since fleets will want to be able to stack reserves everywhere. Yes, one can algorithmically predict demand and chain trips, but unless the world has parking lots full of reserves everywhere for point to point, you will be hankering for a predictable ride you might only find in a bus. Or in a bike you can turn.

This is a good explanation of why busses are necessary in high density areas, but it kind of misses Musk’s point.

As you surely know, in the vast majority of the US, busses are infrequent, sparse, and nowhere near full. In all but a few cities, bus trips account for a negligible fraction of passenger miles travelled. The summon-button-enabled, straight-to-destination bus stops Musk is describing are not, I think, imagined to replace heavily used stops in places like San Francisco or downtown Denver. They are imagined to *add* a bus-like service in somewhere like metro Milwaukee, which currently has no fixed-route transit to speak of, and given entrenched settlement patterns, is not about to.

The geometry problem you describe applies in places that *already have* transit. For the vast majority of Americans, however, whose communities look more like Overland Park, KS than Queens, NY, the geometry problem is that fixed-route, larger busses will never be a practical way to get around.

If Musk was saying “Soon we’ll abolish the MTA and the T and BART!” I’d call him a fool. But I read him as saying “Maybe people will come to use something like transit in Overland Park.” I find that both interesting and compelling, so I don’t find this article that helpful.

Does the author of this text understand English? I’m in doubt to be honest, because he simply made up his wall of text out of one phrase. Shame on you.

This article forgets that Elon’s fleet will not be replacing today’s buses. It will be replacing the cars with single occupant. A Tesla would pick me up and drop me off at my destination then it would pick up the next passenger and drop them off at the their destination. Geometry problem solved. That is one car on the road for what would have been two cars and only one car that needs to be parked therefore parking lots and parking spaces on roads would disappear thus more space for lanes on streets. GEOMETRY SOLVED! It’s not rocket science or maybe it is because only Elon Musk is understanding this solution and everybody else does not have his vision because if they did then they would have started SpaceX and Tesla.
